Academic Expectations
Third graders work in all curricular areas extending from literal to conceptual concepts. They are growing in independence and responsibility. Common Core Standards for English-Language Arts
Reading - Readers Workshop, mini-lessons, independent reading, shared reading, interactive read alouds, fiction and nonfiction comprehension focus, small group guided reading with leveled readers, individualized seat work
Phonics & Spelling - grade-appropriate spelling lists, small group instruction, games, and practice
Writing - Writers Workshop, mini-lessons, Writer's Craft lessons, three genres: narrative, informative, opinion
Speaking & Listening - collaborative conversations, appropriate sharing and listening during class discussions, partner share, turn and talk, small group accountable talk, oral presentations
Penmanship - pencil grip, correct formation of letters, cursive writing

enVision Math - whole group lessons, partner games, small group instruction
Concepts:
Place Value & Number Sense (Numbers in Base Ten) -round numbers to nearest 10 or 100, add and subtract numbers within 1,000, multiply 1-digit numbers by multiples of 10
Computation (Operations and Algebraic Thinking) - multiplication and division within 100, solve word problems using all four operations
Fractions- fractions are numbers, equivalent fractions, whole numbers as fractions, on a number line, comparing fractions
Time - time to the minute
Data Analysis and Graphing -picture graphs, bar graphs, line plots
Geometry-reason with shapes and attributes, area, perimeter
Problem Solving - critical thinking and ability to explain/show thinking in several ways
